Swallowed Up OIL

Swallowed Up is a powerfully emotional and expressive work that explores the multivalent idea of loss. This painting centers particularly on the loss of a cat’s life.  This is eluded to by the inclusion of cat ashes in the painting’s lower portion.  The remains of two of my cats are present in the work – Irene who died Monday, August 19, 2013 and Honey who died Saturday, March 10, 2012.

A large, black void expressed in the open mouth of the cat denotes the infinite, the unknown, and where we all go when death comes.  The collage element of various images of cats missing/lost or in shelter cages further accentuates the notion of loss.  The question arises of what happens to all of these animals who wander off every day never to be found.  The insecurity and emptiness felt when one loses a pet and the lasting effects it can have on a human being is offered up for contemplation.
